6 Secrets to a Successful Long-Term Relationship

Strong relationships are like a really good conversation with someone you admire, trust and cherish – they are ever-changing, engaging, wonderfully rewarding and sometimes surprising. But in order to continue the conversation because you want to see what the person has to say next, you have to respect your significant other’s opinion even when you disagree with it.
And just like a good conversation, you need to work on keeping your end up too. You need to show attention and nurture the relationship constantly, just as you would nurture anything you value in life. You don’t just “get married” and that’s the end of it. Indeed, marriage is just the beginning of a long process of learning to openly and honestly communicate with another person in a respectful and caring manner. Here are some tips to live happily ever after…..
1. Compromise
Relationships are about not only taking, but also giving. If you find yourself not giving very much, or feeling resentful of how much you give and how little you receive back, you may be in an unequal relationship where one side is taking more than they are giving.
For instance, couples sometimes mistakenly believe that “love” will help them deal with any issue that comes up, and that if the other person truly loved you, they would just do as you ask. But people are independent with their own unique needs and personalities. Just because we found someone we want to spend our lives with doesn’t mean we give up our own identity in the process.
2. Communicate
Relationships live and die not by the sword, but by the amount of discussion. If two people can’t find a way to openly and honestly communicate their needs and feelings to one another, the relationship doesn’t stand much of a chance long-term. Couples must find a way to communicate regularly, openly, and directly.
This doesn’t mean waiting for an argument to tell your significant other how much he bothers you with his throwing his clothes on the floor instead of the hamper. It means telling him when you feel the need to, and to do so in a manner that is respectful but assertive.
Different people have different areas of concern, but almost everyone values trust and honesty from their partner above all. Why? Because your partner is the one person you want to be able to depend upon in the long-term, without question or doubt.
Little things where your significant other hasn’t been completely honest shouldn’t be blown out of proportion, because virtually everybody tells little white lies (especially when one is dating). Focus instead on the big things, like if they say they’re a lawyer and you discover they’ve never even passed the bar, or they say they like kids but later on insist on never having one.
3. Have some fun together
Sometimes, long-term relationships can seem to be all about sacrifice. Working hard for the mortgage, the household chores, and the kids can really create a strain. Take some time out at least once a week to do something enjoyable together. Have some laughs with each other and remind yourselves why you fell in love in the first place.
4. Give the other person some space

If you try to impose your own values, schedule, and priorities on your partner, they'll start to feel as if you're trying to own their life. Give them some freedom to do what they want to. Let them go out with friends, have some quiet time alone, and some space in the household to do with as they please. Someone who feels suffocated will soon fight their way out of the situation that's doing it to them.
 5. Forgive Quickly
There is absolutely, positively zero chance that a long, successful relationship is going to be 100% free of mistakes having been made over the long haul. Hell…over the short haul, either, for that matter. And when they happen, just let it go.
6. Never Compare Your Partner to Others
Make your partner the apple of your eye.

how to handle jealousy in a relationship

According to wikipedia:

“Jealousy is a secondary emotion and typically refers to the negative thoughts and feelings of insecurity, fear, and anxiety over an anticipated loss of something that the person values, particularly in reference to a human connection. Jealousy often consists of a combination of presenting emotions such as anger, sadness, resentment and disgust. It is not to be confused with envy.”

Jealousy is a basic human emotion arising from the longing for another person's success, fame, riches or status. We all feel it at some point in our lives and it's normal. But, extensive jealousy may very well be caused by a deeply embedded anger against a person, society or even your own self. Excessive jealousy is often the result of low self-confidence and self-esteem about oneself. Socially, jealousy may mean a sensed threat to a harmonious relationship.

Jealousy can hurt a relationship if it becomes an obsession in which you do not trust your partner and feel that you have to watch their every move. Questioning them constantly about where they have been and who they have been with. Insinuating that they have done something wrong or have cheated. Calling them several times a day, having them carry a beeper, cell phone or the like so you can be in contact with them many times a day. Making assumptions that they are cheating can hurt the relationship.

Jealousy is not always harmful there is what they call healthy jealousy .In certain relationships, such as marriages, jealousy is natural, because partners tend to be possessive of each other. Ordinary envious reactions rearing it's not-so-ugly head is perfectly alright, as long as the persons involved make it all clear to each other. Learning how to cope with this type of jealousy is not difficult, because it's mild and occasional and doesn't need a lot of mind-training.

Destructive jealousy is definitely what you should do everything in your power to avoid. This  is when you frequently, intensely and irrationally jealous. Such uncontrollable jealousy is always harmful and should be eliminated and if to do so, first you must learn how to cope with jealousy.

Knowing the cause for jealousy in any situation is the first step towards overcoming such negative emotions. Your own insecurities and unresolved feelings are often the reasons for feeling jealousy towards another. You will have to follow self-confidence building exercises and techniques to overcome self-esteem issues.

If you are in a relationship and you think there's a threat to it from a third party, how sure are you about it? Could it just be the way you are seeing it? Perhaps, you are mistaken. Don't let your assumptions get in the way of a healthy relationship just because you feel jealous based on imagined problems.

Like in every situation where negative emotions get in the way of rational thinking, positive thinking helps. When jealousy burns, try thinking of better things. So, your colleague got a promotion and you feel envious because you think you deserved it better? Think of the bonus you got on Christmas last year or how fantastic it was to get that pay raise.

Get the perspective of a neutral party. If you are often behaving jealously, they will tell you, but only if you ask in all honesty. Knowing is half way to resolving, so get someone else's opinion.

Communication is always the key to resolving issues, so always find reassurance from people around you, if you feel like you are going overboard with jealousy. The best way to seek help is by talking about whatever that's bothering you and causing the problems.
Jealousy is generally the result of deeply embedded long-term issues, such as anger, anxiety, frustration and inadequacy. An inferiority complex or low self-esteem will make jealousy a front to vent out its wrath, so focus on eliminating all negative emotions.

Effects of Betrayal

The most immediate effect of the betrayal of trust is in the emotional impact on the person betrayed. Generally speaking, the greater the trust that you had put in the other person and the greater the impact their betrayal has on you, then the greater the distress you will feel.
A number of different emotions may be felt upon realizing you have been betrayed. The most common is anger although, depending on the situation, you might the fear of loss of the relationship and repulsion at the lack of integrity of the other person.
When you are betrayed by someone, it is highly likely that you will not easily trust them again. Trust is fragile and can be lost instantly or there is a hysteresis whereby a long-earned trust may be eroded and then suddenly lost.
When a person feels that they have been betrayed, they may well seek some form of justice, putting right (at least for them) what they feel has been wronged, including their sensibilities.
So don't get into these situations!! If you betray someone, it is often best to come clean. Accept responsibility for personal failure and personally apologize. Demonstrate how you will fix process failure, and offer compensation.

The worst betrayal is . . . betrayal of Self . . .

To me, the worst betrayal I have ever known is my betrayal of myself. It wasn't conscious. It wasn't intentional. But it was just as devastating.

I put myself in harm’s way. Many times.
I trusted people known for being untrustworthy.
I put too much emphasis on "blood" and less on "character."
My dream for the "perfect future" clouded my present-time judgment.
I set knowledge aside in favor of folly.
I substituted someone Else's judgment for my own.
I viewed the world through "rose-colored" glasses.
I operated in the world as "I would like things to be" and not "as they are."
I extended myself far beyond my limits, emotionally, financially, spiritually.
I took things personally.
I blamed the other person(s) before taking my own inventory.

What makes a healthy relationship ?

Communication & Sharing: The most important part of any healthy relationship between two people is being able to talk and listen to one another. You and the other person can figure out what your common interests are. You can share your feelings with the other person and trust that they will be there to listen and support you. In healthy relationships, people don't lie. Communication is based on honesty and trust. By listening carefully and sharing your thoughts and feelings with another person, you show them that they are an important part of your life.

Respect and Trust: In healthy relationships, you learn to respect and trust important people in your life. Disagreements may still happen, but you learn to stay calm and talk about how you feel. Talking calmly helps you to understand the real reason for not getting along, and it's much easier to figure out how to fix it. In healthy relationships, working through disagreements often makes the relationship stronger. In healthy relationships, people respect each other for who they are. This includes respecting and listening to yourself and your feelings so you can set boundaries and feel comfortable. You will find that you learn to understand experiences and feelings of others as well as having them understand your experiences and feelings. Trust is everything. Without trust there will be no relationship. You can have a shell of a relationship but there will be nothing truly there. Think about all the people you know that question their spouse about every little detail of the day. This is not trust. Trust is vital for any relationship to become strong and everlasting.

Honesty. Where does a relationship go without honesty? No one truly wants a relationship based on lies. Even white lies will eventually turn into great big lies that forever need to be covered up. Be honest with your spouse at all costs. I can personally see no reason for any lie in a relationship. Lies are like a poisonous gas that will silently kill your relationship.

Make and keep clear agreements. Respect the differences between yourself and your partner. Do not expect your partner to agree with you on every issue. Reach a mutual agreement or plan, and then commit to it. If you say you're going to meet your partner for lunch at noon, be on time or call if you absolutely must be late. If you agree to have a monogamous relationship, keep that agreement. Keeping agreements shows respect for yourself and your partner, as well as creating a sense of trust and safety.

Forgive one another. Forgiveness is a decision of letting go of the past and focusing on the present. It's about taking control of your current situation. Talk about the issue and try to reach a mutual agreement on how to handle the situation in the future and then commit to it. If you can't reach an agreement, it's a bad sign. If you learn from the past and do not repeat the same pattern, it's a good sign. It's the only way to prevent yourself from more disappointment, anger or resentment. Respect your partner, when your partner tells you to leave them alone, do give him or her the time and space.

Appreciate yourself and your partner. In the midst of an argument, it can be difficult to find something to appreciate. Start by generating appreciation in moments of non-stress, and that way when you need to be able to do it during a stressful conversation, it will be easier. One definition of appreciation is to be sensitively aware so you don't have to be sugar-coating anything; so tell your beloved that you love him or her, and that you don't want to argue but to talk and make it better.

Admit your mistakes and say sorry. One possible way to do this is to talk after having a misunderstanding or argument. For example you can ask your partner to give you some time to think of the wrong and right things that you and he/she did. Ask your partner to do the same thing and talk to them when you are both ready. Ask your partner to give you time to talk and explain to them why you were angry, the wrong things you did, the things they did that you did not like and what you would like them to change. Ask your partner to do the same thing and give them a fair chance to talk and explain also. This will make your relationship stronger and help strengthen the communication between you and your partner.

Don’t Forget to Laugh: Humor is the great conflict de-escalater and a wonderful release. I’m always encouraged by couples I’m working with who laugh a lot, have private jokes, pet names for each other or whatever! If you lighten up in your relationship it will pay great dividend

Make Love. No matter how much life gets in the way make time for intimacy between you and your spouse. It has been said that your sex life with your spouse directly corresponds with your success rate as a couple. It is true. When you are intimate with your spouse , be in that moment. Don't be a million miles away in your mind, turn yourself over completely to the intimacy.

A healthy relationship will last forever.....

How to move on from a break up

Break-ups can be difficult and painful, but the important thing to remember is that a break up is not the end of the world. Sometimes a break-up can even be a good thing because it will give you a chance to re-evaluate your life, and maybe even lead you to find someone more suitable. The truth is, that you can move on after a break-up no matter how bad it may have been.

Keep your calendar full. The more time I spent alone, the more time I spent thinking about what my ex and I would have been doing or talking about. So reached out to your close friends, reconnected with acquaintances, accepted every invitation, and do your best to keep your social calendar full. One, it kept you busy so you wouldn’t start reminiscing about your relationship or obsessing over something. You  got to spend time with people you cared about.

Surround yourself with friends and loved ones. Talk about how you're feeling and allow them to comfort you and offer you advice. A break-up can be a very lonely experience, so surrounding yourself with others you love and trust will help to erase some of the loneliness. Don't try to deal with the experience all by yourself. Go out and meet new people, rebuild old relationships, network and immerse yourself into social situations. Keep yourself busy doing things you enjoy with the people you love, and don't dwell on the past.

Go out and have fun. Don't stay home and sulk, as it will only make you feel more miserable. Round up a group of friends and hit the town. Do something fun and exciting, such as a night of dancing or bar hopping. Plan a weekend beach or camping trip or take a quick out-of-town getaway. Going out with friends will remind you that being single can be just as fun as being in a relationship. It will also help to keep your mind off your ex.

Begin to Date Again. After a Breakup. When you’ve given yourself enough time to work through your emotions, then you can begin to date again. The amount of time needed for this varies with the people involved and the specifics of the relationship. Gage emotions about your ex honestly, and if you’re not overcome at the very thought of them, work on meeting new people. Aim for a state of indifference. In other words, it’s okay to get a slight twinge upon seeing your ex; it’s not okay to suddenly want to throw a plate at their head. When you first start dating again, do it with a pace slow enough to meet a variety of people. Go easy on the people you date at first, don’t expect them to be your ex, or the “better” version of your ex. Remember, everyone is unique. If they’re the right one, you’ll know it in time. But allow yourself the perspective to find out. In the meantime, enjoy the new person in your life for whom they are, and have fun just being with them.

Seek guidance and counsel. You don't necessarily have to see a shrink or a therapist. You could go to a trusted family member or friend and discuss your revelation. It is never recommended that you act solely on your own instincts unless there is some intensely compelling reason. It is always preferred and wiser to seek the input of a trusted friend or relative before taking action that will affect your whole life. Seriously meditate on all possible consequences of your actions. After you have spoken to your "advisors" or "counselors," take the time to play out several scenarios in your mind before you do anything drastic. Will you lose your job? Will your relationship end? What will happen if you do Plan A? What about Plan B? Simply out of courtesy to others, it should be said that the option that creates the narrowest swath of destruction is generally best. However, if your revelation is one such as outing a molester in your family - in this case, you cannot allow consideration of who will be hurt or upset to enter into your thinking

Volunteer to be of service to those less fortunate than yourself. Get over feeling sorry for yourself by volunteering at the Red Cross blood bank, the local hospital, the library, your church... There is no limit to the possibilities -- just do it. In addition, service organizations are great places to make professional contacts, develop friendships, or meet your soul-mate

If you're comfortable being around your ex and don't feel the need to slip back into your old relationship, congratulations! You have moved on with your life!

Being a Single

Single? - More freedom and independence

Being single can be a life-saving, rejuvenating experience. In fact, one can't truly be successful in a relationship without being single for a time. Being single allows us to do what we want, when we want, and with whom we want without having to answer to anyone. Being single allows us to take full responsibility for paying our bills, cleaning and decorating, cooking our meals, planning our activities, and entertaining ourselves.

It allows us the time to sit in quiet solitude, to run naked around the living room, to belch as loud as we want, and secretly watch shows that no one else would actually ever admit to watching. This is because we have more time on our hands and are not avoiding looking at ourselves by focusing our energies on someone else.

Basically, being single affords each of us the opportunity to discover who we are, what we do and don't like, how we deal with things, what we want out of life, what our expectations are, what our potentials and limitations are, what energizes and empowers us, and what discourages and disappoints us.

The goal of being alone should not be to prepare us for couplehood. Rather, the goal of being single should be to learn to fulfill ourselves, to meet our needs, and to develop as a human being regardless of whether or not we choose to enter into a relationship. By learning to love and care for ourselves, we diminish the risk of starving for someone else to fill the void within our souls; a void that only we can truly fill.

The purpose of entering into a relationship should be to share oneself with another person as opposed to trying to get from someone what is lacking in ourselves. Expecting someone else to fill in the gaps usually results in grave disappointments, a sense of failure, and endless resentment.

Being in an unhealthy relationship is no more admirable than being alone and isolated. However, choosing to be a happy single can be just as satisfying (if not more so) than thriving in a healthy relationship. With the advent of increased divorces, delayed marriages, fewer births, and growing female independence, more and more people will find themselves single. So, why not make the most of it? Sit back, have a soda, and try belching as loud as you can! You'll never know what you can accomplish until you try!

Benefits of being a single

You can flirt as you please
You can be your own boss
You can focus on your career
You can be spontaneous
You don’t have to deal with another’s personal habits
You have more time for activities
You can control your finances
You can appreciate your independence
You can gain weight without worrying
You don’t have to tolerate moodiness & nagging

The bottom line is that there is green grass on either side of the single or not single fence. My friends with girlfriends and wives are jealous of my freedom, and I'm jealous of their great relationships. The key to remaining happy whether you're single or not is to celebrate the great things about being single or not single. And, try to be happy no matter what situation you're in because chances are you'll be on the other side of the fence at some point.

Choosing the right Man to Marry

Choosing the right man to marry can be challenging currently, when people seem to marry just for the sake of being married, so they are not alone. However, this is one time not to follow the herd, because there are simply too many people rushing into marriage without thinking of the consequences. Marriage is supposed to be forever, but how can it be forever when people get married for the presents, pregnancy, and the fear of being alone? If you get married for one of those reasons, you will surely find yourself headed for divorce court eventually. The trick, of course, is to choose the right man the first time

Finding the perfect man is never an easy task and never goes according to any plan that one may develop in her head. The first step to finding the perfect man for you is figuring out exactly what you want and begin to acquire those qualities.
Becoming what you wish to attract is always the best course of action in attracting the right man to choose for marriage. Rushing into a relationship never works. Take your time and develop a strong friendship first before heading to the next level. Building a strong friendship allows the two of you to gain the trust and open communication, which is vital to a healthy relationship.
Relaxing and taking the time to get to know a man inside and out is a great way to determine if he is the right one to choose for marriage. Do not try to hurry love, as the song says; go leisurely, always take your time, and if the relationship does not seem right on the mark, back off.
Settling for a mediocre relationship is never good, so do not settle for it. Speak up if there is something huge that irks you. You deserve a man who will make you feel great, emotionally, sexually and in all the ways, which are important in a relationship. Men who begin belittling you or controlling in the early stages of the relationship will only do it more as time passes.

The right Woman to Marry

Marriage is a spiritual bonding between a man and a woman. Finding the right woman to marry is difficult and challenging as well as finding the perfect man. It takes years to really get to know your partner well. Days or months of being together simply won't cut it, just because, you tend to not see someone's flaws or shortcomings when you're madly in love and infatuated with each other

You may never really know if she is the one, except with the benefit of hindsight. However, there are certain things you can look at when deciding if she's the one for you. The first question to consider of course is whether she loves you? Seems like a stupid question to consider!! The obvious reaction most men would have is - of course, she loves me. Well, maybe she loves your money more than you - think about that?? And if that is the case, would you be comfortable getting married to her?

To attract and marry the right woman begins internally. By developing the following qualities, you will discover the key to living an abundant and personally fulfilling life with the love of your life.

Generosity of your time and attention.

The right woman will be strongly attracted to a man who freely and willingly shares his time with her. Sincerely conveying an interest in her goals and dreams and what she wants to accomplish in life is very appealing to the right woman. She knows you are focused on your career, but remember that life is all about love - not how many material goals you attain, how far you go in your company or landing the next big deal. She wants your undivided attention when she’s sharing her personal dreams with you. Take the time to pull yourself away from the newspaper,  Local news, the football game, and/or the internet and listen to her share her day with you. It’s the emotional connection that makes the right woman want to do more for you day in and day out. When you give your attention to her, you instill a feeling of worthiness.

The right woman desires to express her hopes, dreams, concerns and worries to you without fear of condemnation. Ignoring her is the worst thing you can do when she's sharing this information. Nothing makes her feel unappreciated and unloved faster than being shut out by the man she loves. She doesn’t want you to find a solution or fix the issues she discusses with you. She only wants you to acknowledge her feelings and offer your emotional support.

Making her your priority in life.

Your generosity of your time and attention conveys a sense of security and a belief that she is your main priority in life. It is your responsibility within the relationship to build her confidence up, not tear her down. When her self-esteem is high, she will in turn have the capacity to shower you with her love, attention, devotion and time.

The right woman is not attracted to a one-dimensional man who is focused primarily on his career and furthering his agenda. The right woman will not share her life with a man who makes her feel as if she’s near or at the bottom of your priority list.

Love of family and friends.

The right woman wants to share her joy and happiness with family and friends alike. A man who treats his family and friends with respect, loyalty and love knows the importance of relationships and how they enrich and enhance life.

 Positive attitude.

The right woman is attracted to a man with positive energy. A man who can align his thoughts, words and actions is someone who is not self-centered. The right woman is attracted to a man who backs his positive words with action. He does not wear his feelings on his shoulder or allows every little perceived slight get under his skin and ruin his whole day. He does not get mad every time he gets in the car and encounters bad drivers. He does not go around believing that the world is against him. He knows how to pick his battles and stands up for his beliefs without creating strife for no reason at all.

He gives people the benefit of the doubt and does not take everything so personally. He does not dissect every inflection and tone of voice in what is said in his conversations, looking for an attack on himself and a reason to fight back. He is man enough to forgive, forget and move on. He does not allow negative thoughts to take root in his heart, leading to grudges against others.

Respect and honor.

Your life will be blessed in accordance to the amount of respect and honor you show your relationship partner. The more you hold her in your highest regard, the more your life will be full of favor. We all know of men who treat the woman they love with the least amount of respect, honor and consideration over others. She has to fend for herself. To really experience an abundant life, she should be the one person you treat the best.
Trust.
The right woman to marry must have trust in you. A strong relationship involves trusting each other deeply. The most common areas that are a cause of crumbling marriages are money, infidelity, and in-laws. With trust, these areas can be worked out easier. An overly jealous woman is a sign of possessiveness and has a major trust issues. These signs will never disappear over time. It will actually get worse after marriage. It may fade as you get older particularly if she knows that you're not capable of making love to a woman any longer. If a woman is jealous type, she will be jealous with your own parents or relatives as well when it comes to attending holiday celebration or parties. She will control you and persuade you into going to her side of the family instead of sharing the day between your relatives and hers. Worse case scenario will be your jealous wife competing for attention with her own kids.

Understanding and Kindness.
A woman that understands her man is a keeper and the right woman to marry. Kindness, on the other hand, goes with being able to understand how her husband feels from time to time. Being able to go out with your friends at times without getting a hassle nor receiving a guilty conscience from your partner is awesome. Accepting that sometimes, time with the "boys" is needed for her partner to unwind.

What do Girls look for in Guys

He will be brilliant conversationalist
He will be sensitive, kind, understanding and loving.
He will be a very hard working man.
He will help around the house by washing dishes, vacuuming the floor and taking care of the garden.
He will be a man of emotional and physical strength.
He will be as smart as Einstein but look like Tom Cruise.

Any woman dreams of a perfect lover with whom she can experience the passion of love for the first time, but according to most women, such lovers are extremely rare to meet (at a ratio of one to a thousand). So the chances that your husband will be an ideal lover are slim. Still, they exist. How can we spot a superman in a crowd of ordinary men?

An ideal man handles a woman’s breast with care; he never pulls or squeezes them because he’s against force and all for passionate kisses and tender bites.
An ideal man never interrupts a make-out session to answer his phone or switch TV channels.
An ideal man understands that his charm isn’t in the size of his organ, but in his sincere feeling towards a woman.
Creativity and diversity in sex are great, but an ideal lover realizes that his partner isn’t a circus dancer.
An ideal man doesn’t make love only at night as he realizes that his woman is tired after a long, hectic day and needs a good rest. Morning sex is great as the body is rested and the body temperature is high enough to increase sensitivity.

An ideal lover is gentle, patient, and attentive to all your needs, gestures, and words. He lavishes beautiful words on you -- not just before sex, but during it and after it as well. He looks at you as if there are no other women in the world, and this makes you the most beautiful and desirable. He likes all of you: your hair, lips, neck, knees, and toes. His every glance is meaningful, and your heart pounds and invisible wings take you up to the sky. You can feel blue, but never bored with him.
